If you are making your own curtains, congratulations. You have found a great way to get what you want for your home while saving money at the same time. When you have done this for a long time, you already know what you are looking for when you choose your curtain fabric. Those starting out for the first time, however, may not know what they need. Though the choice of color and/or pattern is important, you want to be sure the fabric you choose will serve you well as a curtain. Once you know what you are looking for, you will always make the right choice.
What type of curtain fabric you want to get will really depend on where in your home you are going to be hanging those particular curtains. If you are getting some that are strictly for d?cor purposes, you are going to choose something different for curtain fabrics than if you were worried about letting light in, or keeping light out. You also have to think about the durability of the material you choose, and if it is possible that they are going to be put through a lot of wear and tear, you have to choose wisely.
There are some fabrics that you can find that are good at blocking out light. These fabrics are going to be thicker than what you would get for something else. You may even find a section of the store that is dedicated to curtain fabric. Look through and hold them up to the light to see if you like what you see or not. If you have blinds, you don?t need something that completely blocks light. If you don?t care much, or even want to be sure light can come though, you can get a lighter fabric of your choice for your curtain fabrics
I learned the hard way that you do have to think hard about the curtain fabric that you want to use when you put drapes in rooms that are for children. This extends to their bedrooms as well as any playrooms that you may have. Children, especially young ones, are going to tug on curtains. They are going to put things on them that require you to wash them often, and may even go after them with the scissors. You may not be able to get curtain fabric the resists scissors, but you can find some that will hold up well in the wash.
